The Reverend Jacob Smith was born on the Navajo Reservation and was raised in Yuma, Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 2000 with a BA in History, with an emphasis in Near Eastern Studies. He received his M. Div from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in May, 2006. Jacob was ordained to the deaconate on June 3, 2006 in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, and ordained a presbyter at Calvary Church on December 3, 2006 by the Rt. Rev. E. Don Taylor.
Jacob grew up in the Episcopal church. At the University of Arizona, he was active in Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and served as a youth minister at St. Michael's and All Angels’ Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona. After completing his BA, Jacob served as the director of youth ministries at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Yuma, Arizona. He served for three years at St. Paul’s; during that time, his call to the ordained ministry was encouraged and confirmed.
In the fall of 2003, Jacob began his studies at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry where he studied church development, church growth, and theology. While at Trinity, he helped start an organization called the Green House Forum, which provided students with the opportunity to hear and learn from church planters around country.
Jacob oversees Christian education from nursery to 6th grade and the Sunday Forum at Calvary-St. George's. He coordinates the annual Thanksgiving dinner at Calvary-St. George's, which feeds around 250 New Yorkers.
Jacob was married August 4, 2001 to Melina, whom he met at the University of Arizona. They have two children, Sophia and Henry. Jacob loves history, unusual cuisine, and reality television. He also has a passion for theology, especially issues of law and Gospel and the doctrine of justification by grace, through faith, in Christ alone.
Jacob co-hosts "The Two Words" a weekly theological program which seeks to explore life, culture, and the scriptures through God's two words, Law and Gospel. "The Two Words" is produced by St. George's Music Director, Matt Veligdan.
